Child Therapy: The Listening Program®

The Listening Program® is a National Association for Child Development (NACD) Approach that aims towards improving auditory tonal processing in both adults and children. The Listening Program® (TLP) plays classical music through high quality headphones to improve brain fitness, reduce sensory sensitivities, and help people feel comfortable in their everyday environment. Brain fitness is defined as the brain’s ability to improve over time by engaging in healthy sound practices. Our therapists in Chicago at Lumiere Children’s Therapy use this child therapy approach to improve sensory awareness, speech production, attention span, and language development.

Child Therapy Approach
TLP is a common child therapy approach for speech and occupational therapists. There are many different programs and lessons within TLP that can be individualized towards your own child’s needs. The therapists will create a listening schedule for your child and measure his or hers progress throughout the program. Depending on your child’s goals, TLP is typically used between 9-30 minutes a day for 5 days a week.

This TLP approach generally will last for about 20-40 weeks. The therapist can make modifications during the program as they see fit to ensure the absolute best results possible.

Who uses it?
Our occupational therapists in Chicago recommend TLP for children who are hypersensitive to sound, hyposensitive to sound, sensory sensitive, and ADHD. Our speech therapists in Chicago recommend TLP for children that have difficulties with speech production as well as receptive and/or expressive language skills. The therapists have seen very successful results with this program. TLP is designed to improve listening, sensory function, learning, speech and language, reading, attention, memory, auditory processing, the ability to process specific frequencies of sound, vestibular function, and sound sensitivity.

The Listening Program® Equipment
TLP is designed for at home use so the children can feel comfort in their own environments. They recommend using quality headphones especially their Waves multi-sensory system. (http://a.advancedbrain.com/tlp/tlp_products_equip.jsp).
