Therapists in Chicago: Amanda Wizinsky

Amanda Wizinsky is one of Step by Step Care Group’s physical therapy supervisors. Amanda completed her undergraduate in pre-physical therapy at the University of Cincinnati. She received her doctorate of physical therapy at College of Mount St. Joseph. Amanda has had experience in Hospitals, Chicago Public Schools, and Rehabilitation Institutes. I had the opportunity to ask Amanda a couple questions about her work as a pediatric physical therapist.
Q: How would you define physical therapy?
A: Pediatric physical therapy is the facilitation of gross motor milestones through play.
Q: What are some common physical disorders of children you work with?
A: I work with a variety of disorders such as Global Developmental Delay, Gross Motor Delay, Torticollis with Plagiocephaly, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Genetic Disorders.
Q: What are some common milestones you focus on with your patients?
A: I focus on rolling, crawling, pulling to stand, cruise along furniture, walking, and jumping.
Q: What are some infant physical therapy exercises you use frequently?
I frequently put children in the prone position (tummy time) to build head and neck control.
Q: What are some at home physical therapy exercises parents can do with their children?
A: Provide supervised tummy time and encourage head rotation and elevation in this position.
Q: Explain a case that was extremely successful for you as a therapist?

A: All cases are successful. I cannot think of one child that hasn’t progressed with PT intervention. It is a joy to see children discover new movement strategies as well as the look they get on their face when they do something new!

Additional articles about common physical therapy disorders will be uploaded in the next couple of weeks, along with research and activities for implementing tummy time at home! If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s physical development contact Step By Step Care Group for a free screening.
