- Receptive language is the skill of understanding the world around you and processing the information you receive. Children begin to work on this skill at a very young age, and it is done best during natural contexts throughout the day.
- In the following weeks we will review one specific strategy that you can implement into your daily routine to help your child practice receptive language skills.
- The first strategy we will discuss is “labeling”. This strategy is best practiced throughout the day by consistently labeling everything the child interacts with and other objects in the immediate environment.
- As the child hears the word over and over again they will apply meaning to the object and begin to recognize its label. For instance if you say “ball” each time your child reaches for the ball or touches the ball they will begin to relate that label with the object.
- Be sure to use the label in new contexts as well. For example use a different type of ball and in different settings throughout the day. If you would like a more structured receptive language activity for children that are a bit older please click here.
